Police have revealed more details about why the M27 was closed for several hours last week.

The busy motorway was closed in both directions between junctions 5 and 7 from 1.45am until 5am on May 2.

Scores of drivers travelling through Hampshire overnight were caught up in disruption caused by the key road's closure.

It later emerged that a 36-year-old man, from Brierfield in Lancashire, had been arrested on suspicion of assault, which related to an incident which occurred just before 1am at an address on Allington Lane.

But now, Hampshire Police has revealed more details about why the assault, and the reason for the lengthy road closure.

The force has confirmed that the assault the 36-year-old man was arrested in connection with was of a domestic nature.

A spokesperson for the force also added: “Shortly after the reported incident on Allington Lane, there was a concern for the man’s welfare on a bridge over the M27.”
