Poortvliet's forward push
JAN POORTVLIET
JAN POORTVLIET

After Jan Poortvliet's first game in charge of Saints brought a convincing 4-0 win he gave his players one simple message - keep going forward.

The new head coach used last night's opening pre-season friendly to take a look at 23 of his squad and they cruised to a four-goal victory over non-league Farnborough.

Matt Paterson, Adam Lallana, Bradley Wright-Phillips and David McGoldrick got the goals but perhaps the most eye-catching thing was the new formation, a 4-2-1-2-1.

The players are starting to adapt to the system but Poortvliet wants them to get is used to it even further and for pushing forward even when not in possession to become routine.

He said: "You always have to say they have to play forwards when they don't have the ball.

"In general they want to walk or run backwards but when they have the ball we want to go directly forwards to put pressure on.

"Sometimes it was very good to see that but we have to make that a usual thing for us.

"It makes football a bit prettier to do and to watch."

We beat Farnborough 4-0 WOW!!!! How many leagues are they below us??

Well, after a season of "total football" we could well be a league closer to Farnborough! (or two if they get promoted)

What would you rather them beat us 4-0, theres just no pleasing some people! Instead of being so sarcastic why don't you use this energy and get behind the Saints, pre-season has to start somewhere and all teams play lower leagues at the start, go along to the West Ham friendly and see if you have the same view after this before slating the team so early on.

The negative idiots above most likely wrote the same when we lost to Eastleigh a couple of seasons ago! This is PRE-SEASON practice and all clubs warm up gradually so stop being so negative. Write something positive and you may find the world a happier place or at least wait until Xmas before writng OUR team off!

You can't have a positive without having a negative. It's basic physics dear boy.

Good start saints especially when jan fielded two completely different sides each half and also he is mixing the players with more younger players coming through so yeah good start and lets see how they all progress together hopefully winning, and BWP scoring wow did he see a handbag in the net and hit it with the ball.

Ah, but if we get relegated and Farnborough get promoted two level, is that two negatives or positives? Cheer up, we all have our "Blue Days" "Old Boy". We continue to make steady progress, withing our current fiscal situation, but can expect Scacel, Viafara and Stern John to depart soon. Rumours re Ian Baird persist and I am sure that Saints will be looking at a couple of left backs soon. (Having given the youngsters a chance in some friendlies). Unless someone does eventually come in with some money, and I do not want to open up that can of worms again, this is the way that we have to progress. I for one still remain confident of progress on the playing side, which will in turn make us more attractive to a potential investor. I remain Saints Forever. "Well done last night lads".

Good positive start - I'm going up the A303 to Basingstoke for the XI's game on Saturday so hope to see the new faces and what they're like.

The big one will be next Friday v Celtic.....!!

Don't expect too much next friday. Most likely a Lazio style score. Celtic are becoming a force in Europe and Strachan has said they are not coming for the ride. The teams on paper are like Chelsea playing Rotheram, except Rotherham probabaly have more stars. I hope I am wrong but this new look Saints is going to take time to gel and with neither Jon nor Mario playing last night, we will soon be left with the under tens. We need to keep at least some good players. this is a re-building season, expect aroun 14th place

Don't think Andrew Davies is still injured, saw pics of him training on the SFC website.

Come to think of it, the website said "K.Davies" played the first half last night - you reckon that was supposed to be "A. Davies"?

Good result, obviously just getting the team used to the new way of playing.

Missing from the squad was Andrew Davies, Marek Saganowski, Jhon Viafra, Rudi Skacel, Oliver Lancashire, Stern John & Michael Poke... I haven't got a clue who's injured or not, but looks like these might be the next to be sold although I pray the club has the sense not to sell Andrew Davies.

Andrew Davies still recovering from surgery at the end of the season.
Marek Saganowski given extra time off due to involvement in Eoro 08 - as was Rudi Skacel but obviously we know he is off to Ipswich.

Davies had a bad injury at the end of last season and maybe being protected. Saga and Skacel 'played' in the euros and as such will have only got back training this week, John also played a few games for T&T in the summer and may also have come back to training later....

As for Jhon, I am hoping we've lined up a buyer, from what little I know of the youngsters lined up to play in CM they all have better technique than him and there can't be any room in a 'passing' side for someone like Jhon.

"The players are starting to adapt to the system but Poortvliet wants them to get used to it even further and for pushing forward even when not in possession to become routine."

Not sure I get this? Does this mean he doesn't want forwards to track back when we don't have possession?

Could be an interesting season ahead if that is what it means.

Do opponents push full backs forward, knowing they won't be tracked, leaving their own defence bare should they lose possession?
Will not tracking forward runs by opposition defensive players leave us more open to concede goals, when our own defence is out numbered?

I think this could do with explaining in more detail.

Better than our first friendly last year -managed to let in 2 goals in a 4-2 win against Eastleigh (who are in the same league as farnborough).

Indeed.

Viafara seems to suffer from the same disease a lot of our players have had in recent times.

On a couple of occasions I've seen him he's been dominant and impressive, but only seemed to be capable of showing that sort of form in 1 in 10 games if that.

Skacel, Saga (though I'm still praying he can rediscover his early form with us in a passing team) and Idiakez are just a few of the others to be like that (and dare I say Surman as well).

I hope this fresh start will start to build a culture where players are expected and willing to put in 100% week in week out.

In Davies and Perry is see two players who have that kind of spirit and I think Surman, with the right people around him (and maybe the armband) can also really step up to the mark.

They are the type of players I think would make proper role models for the younger players.

I do think Kelvin needs to go though, at least as No1, he's been the cause of a huge amount of the defensive instability in my opinion.

Nice guy I'm sure, decent stopper, but doesn't inspire the sort of confidence I'm talking about.

I'd love us to sign Wright, but can't see it happening.

I take it you're joking? Not sure it was a coincidence that our defence suddenly tightened up when Wright came on loan last season. Davies is like Paul Jones, prone to lapses and far from commanding.

You're a joke. Sorry, usually prefer to make a constructive comment, but this sort of rubbish doesn't deserve it.

Please go and support Pompey as you blatantly don't want this club to do well.

I'm not a fan of Lowe, but nothing would please me more than him getting things right this season.

If that means he can be smug about it, fine, but if he's successful, it will mean Saints have been successful, and that's all I'm bothered about.

In the seasons Lowe wasn't in charge we sold ALL our best young players, didn't replace them and followed a policy of bringing in loan signings for three-month periods before losing them to other clubs if they did well.

Result was zero continuity and having to start again every season.

At least now we're trying to get something sustainable in place.

Please do us all a favour and don't bother turning up next season.

Most of us want an end to all this doom and gloom and a bit of optimism.

Maybe everyone can unite behind the team and against the opposition.

But not while you continue to drag us all down.

Couldn't agree more! This is the best thing to happen to Saints in years and years!! There's no mucking about anymore, RL has come in with a plan that will secure our future for a long time to come! Unfortunately Jason, southampton is full unbelievably stupid, short sighted people and can't see what RL and co are trying to achive!

I disagree with you Condor Man. I think Vignal was a bit of a saviour for us last season; after losing Bale there were big boots to fill and the more he played, the better and more confident he was. (He's certainly better than Surman in that position)

Dailly and Bennett also did quite well down the centre and Hammill wasn't playing anywhere near as much as I would have liked. With him on the right and Surman on the left, the pace was so much quicker and we had more goalscoring opportunities. (but due to the fact that only Stern could score last season, that wasn't working too well either!)

Pearson showed that with the right loan signings, a difference can be made. The problem is that loans are temporary, even season-long ones.

But.....whatever happens, happens and I'm looking forward to 9th August.

One month to go, we're in for one helluva ride!!!

You really are a plonker mate. You never have anything insightful to say, just the same old Lowe out drivel without ever coming up with viable alternatives.

If only I could get Super legend days 74 and David Crook in my army, the future days for Southampton Football Club would be so bright and positive.

Great result, when youth is played it will always bring enthusiasm and a positive attitude.

Issue is can that youth sustain it over 46 games against seasoned pro's?

Lowe has again embarked on an excellent strategy to get the club solvent and the Dutch guy and his team will help that by developing players to be sold for high profit.
