Portsmouth sign Crouch from Anfield
 |
| Peter Crouch |
LIVERPOOL manager Rafael Benitez will step up efforts to secure his primary transfer targets after agreeing a fee with Portsmouth for the sale of striker Peter Crouch.
The two clubs had been at odds over the England international's value, with Benitez putting it as high as £15million earlier in the summer and Pompey making an offer of £9million, but a compromise appears to have been reached on the structuring of the deal.
Reports suggest Portsmouth will pay an initial £8million with a further £3million payable in add-ons over the course of Crouch's contract at Fratton Park.
''We have reached a verbal agreement with Portsmouth and have given them permission to speak with Peter,'' a spokesman told the club's website, www.liverpoolfc.tv.
Crouch joined Liverpool for £7million from Saints in 2005, having previously played for Pompey in 2001-02, but last season found his opportunities in the starting line-up limited as Benitez changed his formation to get the best out of record signing Fernando Torres and inspirational captain Steven Gerrard.

A very good signing by Pompey, they really are snapping up some decent players.
[bold]But[/bold] this signing will be eclipsed by the massive signing of a striker coming at SMS later this week.
I've said too much.

Aren't Saints entitled to any cash? didn't we negotiate a sell on clause?

No Condor Man, no sell-on clause, it was sold last year for less than 10% of what it would have been today.
@Sonny - half decent - 10 more players? You do the maths dinlo.
@crew657 - he's had a Mare in his lovelife.

What a bargain buy for Pompey! Crouchy has proved his detractors wrong time and time again by scoring goals at every level he's played in. As such he deserves to be recognised as far and away the best English-born centre forward of his generation. Shame that idiot Steve Wigley didn't see it; keeping him in the reserves for all that time probably cost us our place in the Premiership.

Another kick in the teeth for us long suffering Saints fans.
Our once poor neighbors are now in a position to buy one player for a price that is higher than the total value of our club. How times have changed.
