Racist crimes rise by a third
RACIST crime leapt by almost a third in Hampshire, one of the biggest increases in the country.
Figures taken from 2006/07 showed 2,228 race-related incidents were recorded, up 30.5 per cent on the previous year.
Force chiefs said the rise reflected the confidence the public had in the police to investigate race crimes and highlighted the high number of convictions achieved for race hate incidents.
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: "The figures are a positive indication of the huge amount of work the Force has undertaken to encourage our communities to come forward and report racist incidents.
"Crucially, we have invested a vast amount in training police officers in this area to enable them to better identify and resolve hate crimes. Each incident is reviewed by a chief inspector to ensure it is properly investigated."
The latest figures for 2007/08 show a drop in that category with 2,177 race incidents reported.
Bob Purkiss, who sits on the force's police authority panel and is also chairman of the Association of Police Authorities Black and Ethnic Minority Group, said there had been a real drive from "leadership down" in Hampshire to ensure the public had more confidence in reporting race related crime.
He added: "There is no one single issue that explains the rise in racist crime but certainly the increase in confidence from the public that they trust the police to investigate the crime and social changes including eastern European communities in the county can explain some of it."
The report also highlighted an increase in the number of controversial forms completed by police after stopping someone on the street rose by more than a third last year across the country. Officers carried out 1.87 million "stops'' in 2006/07, up from 1.4m.

It was all rather perplexing especially as I was born in England but my neighbours openly told everyone they were going to "send them back where they've come from". I won't tell here what we had to endure over a three year period.

What does "racist crimes" mean here? Do they mean crimes which were proven to be racially motivated, or simply crimes in which the perpetrator and victim were not of the same ethnic origin? Do these figures take into account the fact that the police now consider playground name-calling to be criminal activity? I'm not convinced the number of "racist crimes" has risen, I'm more inclined to believe that the target-oriented culture within the police force has created new "crimes" where there weren't any before

A racist crime is one that is,"deemed racist by the offended",therefore unproven.It seems the increase in complaints could be to do with,criminal compensation,a nice little earner.

Funny that Hampshire Constabulary are quite to report their sucess, racist crimes against minority ethnics and polish people have been going on for quite awhile and now people feel more confident to report these crimes. But what are the police actually doing - my friend has been subjected to race hate crime for months in the coxford area and has reported it to the police and what have they done - told her to investigate the crime herself. Complain to the council and what happens nothing !!! Everybody knows who is behind these hate crimes including the police but what do they do nothing. Southampton has always had a problem with race, the people are rude and behind the times. I am glad I am leave this town, it can't come sooner.

I have to agree...there are so many Grey Area's in this type of 'crime' still it's about time that black on white racist slur's do happend and its just soo easy for a person of 'colour' to use the race card !!!

A group of asian men went round attacking white males travelling alone while claiming they were doing it for holy war! two white men went to hospital, one in a serious condition (i think, i recall) and the biggest sentance was a 12 month conditional!!! Now, if it was a group of white guys claiming to be BNP.....what would the sentence be??
