Saints set for Crouch windfall
PETER CROUCH
PETER CROUCH

Saints could be set for a substantial cash windfall - courtesy of Portsmouth.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is today expected to complete the signing of Peter Crouch from Liverpool for a fee of about £11m, with Saints poised to net a significant sum from a sell-on clause.

When Redknapp was at St Mary's he sold Crouch to Liverpool for £7m after Saints had been relegated.

But Rupert Lowe made the sure the deal had a sell-on clause which could benefit Saints.

It is believed that Saints are entitled to 15 per cent of any profit Liverpool make above that original £7m figure.

That would equate to a payment of around £600,000 into the club coffers if Crouch's move to Fratton Park goes through, which would be a welcome boost to the finances.

For full story see today's Daily Echo.

Be sure to mention Rupert Lowe in your article, we mustn't overlook his importance, we simply mustn't.

The complex payment terms between Portsmouth and Liverpool mean Saints won't see any of this money for some years and nowhere near that 600k figure being desperately bandied about.

Just to confirm, it was Rupert Lowe that made sure the Saints were all right.

Despite presiding over a farcical period in the club's history involving several managers, Nigel Quashie and some apparent duck hunting antics, it's important we recognise the greatness of the man who relegated Southampton and took them to the brink of bankruptcy.

Rupert Lowe
that is, the man behind the 15%, or is it really.

I am certain that many Pompey fans will be delighted to know that the money paid for the England International striker, Peter Crouch, will be of benefit, financially, to our cash-strapped neighbours.
When so many local political pudits claim that to much money heads North, it will be reassuring to some, that a portion is coming back to one of football's deprived areas.

good news ref Pete sad he is going back to pompey. Ref Walcott and Bale, to settle early for less is necessary. especially if the money is banked it reduces the interest that is added on each year and grows and grows

A charitable donation from Pompey, to start the campaign off.

This seems a really ar$e about face way of doing business - why didn't we just sell him for more dosh at the time?

I don't agree with all these deals that can increase payments for players after they've moved. When was the last time it worked out 100% for us?

You don't buy a car for a percentage of the value and pay the rest once you've driven a set number of miles, so why should it be the same for footballers?

It's nice to know that the decades spent in our shadow haven't effected the enormous chip on your shoulder.

Would Dozey Denzil's carer try to explain that Portsmouth FC pay money to Liverpool FC, who pass on part of that money to Southampton FC.
I appreciate that, for a resident of the Home for the Bewildered, it is a complicated thing to deal with, but with patience and words of two syllables, it should be possible to 'penetrate even the most dense forest'!

Totally agree with you Avon from Blakes 7. The bottomline is even if we got promoted, survived our first couple of seasons and got reestablished in the top division - the best case scenario - we will still only be back to the position before Lowe started to really screw up and got us relegated. We shouldnt be in this position, we struggled for so many years, battling against the odds to get established and it was all for nothing, due to gross mis management by Lowe. He should have fallen on his sword immediately after relegation and never darkened our doors again. I for one will never forgive or forget and want him out.... Lowe out, Lowe out

Don't believe all the prices you read in the press, the fee was nowhere near £11m more like £8.25 plus add ons when he's sold. Oh and 4 hub caps , a DVD player & 3 car stereos.
Don't forget as one of your subscribers said a while ago, Pompey are skint and owe millions, where would they get £11M to spend on a player???
Posted by: fitzg, Soton on 2:00pm Wed 9 Jul 08
Sarkey Sam Portsmouth are paying Liverpool an agreed price that they think Crouch is worth now then Liverpool are loosing some of that to us, unless Liverpool have duped Portsmouth into paying more to cover our sell on fee i would say Liverpool are paying us not Portsmouth. Our sell on clause is with Liverpool but then who cares as long as we get something out of someone! I think maybe Denzil was just a little peeved at such a childish post by dippy Dave.

erm.. what's to be jealous about? It's not like we're losing Crouch to you guys, he isn't ours to lose. However we are getting money in without having to sell one of our existing players... it's a result for us.

Message to Adam Leitch (Daily Echo).
Assuming you are correct that Saints have a sell-on clause, you must now report as to how much and when will Saints receive it.
I am sure you will find that it will be a lot less than £600k and will not be received for a long time.

Pompey sold Crouch because we were in the same financial situation that you now find yourselves.
When you sold him, for considerably less than Pompey are now paying for him, you were not pleading poverty, like you are now.
The question has to be asked, why did you sell an under-21 International player?
Is it because there was no one at St Mary's that saw his talent and potential?

Whilst the skates are celebrating their £11 million signing could i p*ss on their bonfire by pointing a couple of things out -
1. The money being spent is not from P*rtsmuff FC - it is coming from a very wealthy individual not because you are a massive club.
2. If Saints ever spent £11 million on Peter Crouch i would be gong mental about us wasting money on a Rodney Trotter lookalike.
3. Is slagging Southampton off for being a dump not a shade on the nutty side when you have such delightful areas such as Fartton, Somerstown, Paulsgrove etc etc.
4. I have lots of friends here in Germany who support Liverpool as their English side - each and every one of them think you are mad as f*ck for paying that sort of money on him.
5. And just for good measure you still have the worst ground in the Premier League, no training ground, the dodgiest and ugliest manager in the world (OK maybe not as ugly as Dowie but its close) and you are all pikies.
Saints may have no money but we won't go bust if our chairman leaves - you will you stupid bunch of twats.

Idiots.

We sold Crouch primarily because we were relegated, and therefore Rupert recognised the need to save top wages, and also because he wanted to go to a bigger club, stay in the premiership, and earn more money.

We never would have hung on to him.

He was way past U21s when we had him, so that is irrelevant. I think he was with you skates at that point in his career. No-one spotted his talent? Eh? he was already at his prime when he left St Marys, we knew he was a good player, and obviously so did Liverpool!!

If I was a Pompey fan (NEVER), I would question the managerial skills of Redknapp. He splashes top money on other clubs reserve players, fees, and top wages, to forge a mid table side!!! an idiot, possibly even a Wigley/Branfoot hybrid could do the same with that sort of dosh!! Look at Everton, Blackburn, until recently Bolton, and even saints, achieved on a fraction of your overblown budget!!

Pompey are a fat, bloated, over inflated joke of a football team that I would be too embarrassed to support as I am of reasonable intelligence, which I suspect the majority of their fans are not.

COYR!!!

The money will be from Liverpool and not from you ya thick skate. As for grubby looking hobos, have you ever been to Pompey?!
Scrapyard Sam, You've just proved my point, and as someone else has pointed out on here, we probably won't see the money for a while anyway, which will definately mean it's not dirty skate money that would come in a brown envelope.

You skates are so thick it's untrue. Stupid, unemployed, washed up old man.

You lot hate it don't you. The gap widens and when the new stadium is built all the wavering fans will say goodbye to your morgue of a ground

How can any real pompey fan welcome Crouchie after that fake handball he won for the saints in the last minutes of the FA cup, it still makes me smile.

The only two humourous things on this thread are Dave's Feed the Scum post (plus the usual chip on shoulder retorts - why are football fans so able to dish out yet not take it? It's a sign of character weakness, Denzil) but the best is that Avon has to add "From Blakes 7" to his name which makes it so laughably lame and pointless as to not be worth doing. If you have to explain exactly who you are it kind of loses its edge doesn't it?

DefinAtely???! It appears that your knowledge of football is definitely on a par with your knowledge of spelling.
Thought you may be interested to know that when Pompey sold Crouch to Aston Villa, there was a 'sell-on' clause, which saw a few bob of Saints' money head for Fratton Park.
If I am 'washed up', I think that is a healthier state than being one of the great unwashed from Chilworth. Your carer should be attending to those needs.

Come on you Saints.
Sometimes Richie, or should you be called Twitchie, its best to keep your GOB shut. Your post is clearly written in green ink by a green eyed monster. Dont you get fed up with writing the same old drivel, mind you I suppose you have nothing good to write about your own dross team so you get your comfort from writing bollokcs about SUPER POMPEY THE ONLY PREMIER LEAGUE SIDE ON THE SOUTH COAST, 2008 FA CUP WINNERS, COMMUNITY SHIELD FINALISTS AND 2008 EUFA CUP QUALIFIERS WITH 5 PLAYERS IN THE CURRENT ENGLAND TEAM WITH A NEW TRAINING GROUND AND NEW STADIUM UNDERWAY WITH THE BEST ENGLISH MANAGER AND AMBITIOUS CHAIMAN IN THE PREMIERSHIP. SO PUT THAT LOT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT TWITCHIE LOVINIT LOVINIT LOVINIT
The green ink would probably be Monchengladbach green - a club with 50,000 attendances and a proper stadium with training pitches next to it. They have a proud tradition and sell more season tickets than you have fans - envy doesn't come in to it. Money has ruined English football and the people missing out are the people who can't afford to go. How many clubs without a wealthy chairman play in the Premier League ????
You have been talking about the new ground for years but even if you build it your genuine fans won't be able to afford to go and you won't fill it.
As for having 5 current England players - perhaps that explains why they didn't qualify for the Euro Championships and that reinforces what i said about your finances - they don't play for you because they like sailors. Agents and big wages have a bit more to do with it.
I do like the way you sign off - a skate going on about smoking pipes (or your mates/family) and twitching - a bit like fartton on match day really.
I hope you do well in Europe for the record - it would be lovely to see your brilliant fans watching you playing a Turkish club - what a friendly fans fest that would be.

I wonder if you were claiming that 'Money has ruined English football', when Southampton were in the Premier League? I somehow doubt it.
I seem to recall that a couple of decades ago, that British players were heading for Italy, where the money was, and it does not seem to have done Italian football any harm.
As the English leagues feature Professional Football Clubs, I would have thought it logical that money was involved in the game. The fact that Southampton have no money, despite having sold any players of quality that they had on their books, shows a total lack of financial competence in the boardroom.
With regard Pompey's new ground. I remember that Southampton had many sites where they wanted to build a stadium, and were knocked back, both by Southampton City Council and by Eastleigh Borough Council. Eventually they landed in the old gasworks, miles from the railway station, with no car parking facility and a lousy bus service. Pompey have had a similar lack of co-operation with their Council, but there appears to be more optimism over this site.
The fact that England did not qualify for Europe, cannot be laid at Pompey's door.
Will ignore the childish comment about liking sailors, but would enquire whether you are in Germany because you like big, blonde men, or are you distancing yourself from the pantomime being performed at St Mary's?

Lowe is very good for the club No one else could or wouldl sort out the financial mess caused by the previous Boards. The previous Boards were only enabled to screw things up by the mindless 'Lowe Out' brigade.

Pompey's new stadium will not be built .It cannot be afforded without cross subsidy from other developments and the current downturn in the economy means that will not happen.

Money hasn't ruined English Football in the sense that we have some of the best players in the World playing in front of British men women and children week after week.

That's the good news and the easy bit.

The tragedy is that money has distorted the game so that only the wealthiest Clubs can sit at the top of the greasy pole and laugh at everyone else.

The Premiership is split into 3 bands (Choose your own clubs).

About 4/5 top clubs with large debt. MU and Chelsea are in (managed, Sam) debt to the tune of £700m. Another 4/5 who can never break into the top positions and the rest who make up the numbers and are just relegation fodder.

Pompey may prove me wrong but I think that they can never break into that top group because they just don't have the money.

Bur enough of Pompey. Southampton have no money - not because of the incompetenve of the Board - but because they have no money. They are in a downward spiral.

Until such time as a 'fat cat' turns up with £20m/£50m of honest money in his back pocket then Saints and every other Club will be in the same position.

The rest is just a few fine debating points and smoke and mirrors.

Choose your own position. Money has made or ruined football.

crouchies comming home? why did you sell him?
Pompey sold Crouch because we were in the same financial situation that you now find yourselves. When you sold him, for considerably less than Pompey are now paying for him, you were not pleading poverty, like you are now. The question has to be asked, why did you sell an under-21 International player? Is it because there was no one at St Mary\'s that saw his talent and potential?
Sam, you salty old sea-dog, got any idea who the Saints manager was when Crouch was sold?
Now let me think, could it have been the same one who sold him when he was at SUPER POMPEY Oh yeah is was SUPER HARRY the FA CUP WINNING MNAGER OF SUPER POMPEY LOVINIT LOVINIT LOVINIT
HAPPY CHAPPY, thanks for answering my question that I put to Sailor Sam - who seems to have ignored it!
So, SUPER HARRY rates Crouch so much that he's sold him twice!!
As for your shout in another posting about being COMMUMITY SHIELD FINALISTS - I didnt realise there were any qualifying rounds to that competition!
5 CURRENT ENGLAND PLAYERS - not for long methinks!
NEW TRAINING GROUND AND STADIUM UNDERWAY - where? has planning permission been granted yet? has the work started?
EUFA CUP - good luck, you will need it!
BEST ENGLISH MANAGER AND AMBITIOUS CHAIRMAN - steady on!

I think you will find i have been boring many people for years about money ruining English football - way way before Saints were relegated. The skates are not responsible for the state of the England team but the players attitudes are - did Campbell, James, Defoe etc etc move to p*mpey for a career progression or because nobody else would meet their wage demands ?????
Anyway for the record i do not like big blond men (although i am sure you will find plenty of fellas that do in Cologne :-) ) but the bee
